LANSING, MI- With Michigan schools facing an October 1 budget deadline, the Oakland County Superintendents Association last week circulated a letter urging lawmakers to sign a funding pledge. State Rep. Donni Steele responded directly in writing. Rather than signing on to a symbolic document, she issued her own pledge that reflects the full responsibility of passing the complete School Aid Budget already approved by the House in July.

In her written response, Steele told the superintendents: “While your very specific pledge is not one that is within my ability to promise, I will pledge the following. I am committed to advancing and passing a comprehensive School Aid Budget that prioritizes the success of every Michigan student. Our children deserve access to high-quality education, safe learning environments, and the resources necessary to prepare them for future opportunities. I will work collaboratively with my colleagues in the Legislature to deliver a responsible, balanced budget that supports students and ensures the efficient use of taxpayer dollars that should deliver an education of excellence.”

Steele also assured school leaders that she is pressing for resolution before the deadline, writing: “Please know that the House of Representatives Leadership has done the work, in good faith. There is a shared anticipation for the coming day when a finalized budget that doesn’t raise taxes, fixes our roads, ensures safe neighborhoods, and funds education can be celebrated with the Governor’s signature.”

“Signing someone else’s pledge may feel like progress, but real leadership is writing your own pledge and then delivering on it,” Steele said. “That is the commitment I have made to Michigan families, and that is the work I intend to finish.”
