Frederick backs reform to better care for elderly, vulnerable COVID-19 patients
RELEASE|December 18, 2020

Measure will address needs of Michigan hospitals, nursing homes

State Rep. Ben Frederick today helped the Legislature approve a reform that will fix a problem creating a bottleneck of patients waiting to be admitted to care and recovery centers while recuperating from COVID-19 in Michigan.

Frederick, of Owosso, said the reform will streamline the Michigan Department of Health and Human Service’s approval process for care and recovery centers (CRCs) where COVID-positive elderly patients who don’t require the critical care of a hospital can comfortably recover from the virus.

“We’re breaking down bureaucratic barriers to get more care and recovery centers in place and better serve our elderly and vulnerable COVID patients,” Frederick said. “This plan will free up hospital beds for patients who need the most critical care while providing a place for our seniors to receive the services they need to fully recover. It also protects vulnerable nursing home residents from possible exposure.”

The final version of Senate Bill 417, as amended by the House, would adjust the rating requirements for CRCs in order to remove barriers to the approval process without compromising the health and safety of the public.

Frederick said simple changes within the bill will make up to 101 facilities eligible to become CRCs, easing the pressure on hospitals across the state. There are presently only 15 CRCs throughout the state.
