State Rep. Timmy Beson last week raised concerns about how state government tracks and utilizes office space during a Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget (DTMB) budget hearing before the House Appropriations Committee.

During the hearing, Beson questioned DTMB officials on current policies regarding unused or underutilized office space across state departments.

“We owe it to taxpayers to make sure every dollar is being used effectively,” said Beson (R-Bay City). “That starts with knowing exactly how much space the state is using, how much is sitting vacant, and whether we’re paying for more than we actually need.”

Beson emphasized that without clear and accurate reporting, lawmakers cannot fully evaluate whether the state’s current footprint is justified.

“If we’ve got office space sitting empty, we shouldn’t be paying for it,” Beson said. “We need to look at consolidating, cutting back, and finding more cost-effective options. That’s just common sense.”

Beson noted his ongoing focus on improving government efficiency and ensuring responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources as the Legislature continues reviewing departmental budgets.

“This is about accountability,” Beson said. “Michigan families have to live within their means, and state government should be held to that same standard.”
