Rep. Bierlein announces winners for 97th House District school essay contest
RELEASE|April 23, 2026

State Rep. Matthew Bierlein is congratulating Brooklyn Krzewinski from Schall Elementary School in Caro, along with Evelyn Pham and Isabelle Case from Freeland Elementary as the essays they recently submitted have been selected as winners of a contest hosted by Bierlein’s legislative office.

The essay contest asked students the question: “If you were a state representative, what would you do to leave a positive impact for the State of Michigan?” Krzewinski suggested a class for students to take on good manners and getting along with others. Pham said protecting the Great Lakes and limiting how much AI is utilized would be priorities, while Case laid out a broad vision that included having a police station, fire station, and hospital in every community, increased school funding, keeping students safe from having to travel to school in cold temperatures, time off for educators on half days, parameters for how much homework can be assigned, and more.

“It was awesome to read through all the essays, and I want to thank the students, teachers and schools across our area who sent them in,” said Bierlein, of Vassar. “This contest was a unique opportunity for young people in our communities to have a platform to share what’s important to them and hear what type of state they would like to inherit when they become decision-makers and leaders in their communities. My congratulations go out to everyone who participated and put their ideas forward.”

The 97th House District encompasses several communities in Bay, Genesee, Saginaw and Tuscola counties. The district includes Freeland, the cities of Auburn, Caro, Frankenmuth, Vassar and part of Montrose, and the villages of Birch Run and Millington. Bierlein is in his second term serving in the state House.
