Rep. Bohnak backs plan for tax-free gun safety devices

State Rep. Karl Bohnak on Thursday cast a key vote to remove sales and use taxes for gun safes and other firearm safety devices. House Bills 4025 and 4026 would ensure safety devices, which are required for gun owners with children, can be purchased tax-free.

“Gun safety is important, but it can also be expensive,” said Bohnak, R-Deerton. “Gun lock boxes can cost well over $100, and gun safes costs are often well beyond $1,000. That can turn into quite an expense for young parents who enjoy hunting or shooting but also have kids in the household. Obviously, we want to keep kids safe. But, if the state is going to require gun owners to purchase these devices, the least it can do is ensure we’re not paying taxes on them.”

The plan reinstates a previous tax exemption for firearm safety devices that expired in 2024. Under the plan, a firearm safety device can include a gun safe, gun case, lockbox, or other device designed to prevent access to a firearm by using a key, combination, biometric data, or similar means. Glass-faced cabinets or firearm displays are not considered firearm safety devices.

HBs 4025 and 4026 now move to the Senate for further consideration.
