State Rep. William Bruck today welcomed Monroe Charter Township Fire Department Captain David Nadeau and Fire Chief Joseph Hernandez to the state Capitol for the Michigan House of Representatives’ annual Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony.

This year’s ceremony carried special significance as Michigan marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Nadeau was one of seven members of the Monroe Charter Township Fire Department who traveled to New York City following the attacks to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero.

Twenty-five years later, Nadeau is battling cancer related to his service in the aftermath of the attacks.

“Twenty-five years ago, Captain Nadeau and six of his fellow firefighters saw our nation under attack and answered the call to help,” said Bruck (R-Erie Township). “They went toward unimaginable devastation to serve people they had never met. That courage and selflessness represent the very best of our first responders and the very best of our country. It was an incredible honor to have Dave, Tricia and Chief Hernandez with me at the Capitol as we remembered those we lost, honored those who answered the call, and recognized the sacrifices that continue to this day.”

The annual House ceremony honors the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as the first responders, public safety professionals and service members who protect their communities and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
