Rep. Fairbairn backs over $700k for local conservation projects
RELEASE|May 20, 2025

State Rep. Parker Fairbairn this month secured over $700,000 for two natural resource preservation projects in Charlevoix County. State funding comes from the Natural Resource Trust Fund (NRTF), which is earned through state land leases for oil and gas mineral exploration. The NRTF proposals for 2025, if signed into law and approved by the Senate, would provide $41.8 million for 17 land acquisition and 68 recreational development projects.

“Michigan is a national model for reinvesting oil and gas profits back into natural resource preservation efforts,” said Fairbairn, R-Harbor Springs. “I’m proud to play a role in securing these dollars for our Northern Michigan communities. Projects like those being pursued in Charlevoix County ensure our natural resources can be enjoyed by local residents and tourists for years to come.”

$322,000 of the NRTF funding would support Boyne City Park improvements, including the construction of the Boyne City Open Space project. The proposal includes the addition of parking and associated sidewalks, stormwater improvements, a rain garden, and site furnishings, which include tables, benches, a bike station, and mobility mats. The total project cost is $460,000, with Boyne City covering the remainder.

$400,000 of the NRTF funding would support the Nakwema Trail Development project. The proposal includes the construction of 2.5 miles of paved, non-motorized trail through Fisherman’s Island State Park. The trail will become part of the Nakwema Regional Trail, linking Charlevoix to Traverse City, for a total length of 45 miles. This trail will also connect to other regional trails, extending the network to 325 miles. The total project cost is $700,000, with the Department of Natural Resources covering the remainder.
