State Rep. Tom Kuhn, R-Troy, issued the following statement after President Trump’s announcement of the new fighter mission at Selfridge Air National Guard Base:
“I fully support the administration’s decision to establish a new F-15EX fighter jet mission at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. This investment not only secures the long-term future of Selfridge and enhances our national defense, but it also delivers a significant boost to Michigan’s economy.
“Selfridge contributes approximately $850 million annually to our economy and supports around 5,000 military and civilian personnel, with a broader economic reach extending to 30,000 jobs statewide. But the impact goes even further. Michigan’s defense and aerospace sector generates nearly $30 billion annually through nearly 4,000 companies—including more than 1,100 suppliers located in Macomb County alone.
“Securing this mission will attract even more defense contractors and help launch new startups, further strengthening Macomb County’s role as the epicenter of Michigan’s defense industry. In 2024, local companies secured $3.21 billion in defense contracts, accounting for roughly 65 percent of all federal defense dollars flowing into our state.
“Today on the House floor, I joined my colleagues in adopting House Resolution 78 in strong celebration of President Trump’s decision. I am proud to be one of many leaders who worked across party lines to help deliver this mission. Selfridge remains not only a cornerstone of our military readiness, but also a powerful engine for economic growth and innovation in Michigan for years to come.”
