Rep. Markkanen: Green-lit Line 5 construction permits provide a win for northern Michigan families, businesses
RELEASE|January 29, 2021

State Rep. Greg Markkanen, of Hancock, today issued the following statement after the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) approved a pair of permits needed for the Line 5 tunnel underneath the Straits of Mackinac. In its announcement, EGLE said the tunnel project could be completed in compliance with state law:

“This announcement is a step in the right direction for northern Michigan families and businesses. They need this tunnel to provide them with fuel and heat. The prospects of being left without – or waiting for it by truck – is a scary and ineffective proposition. But that’s where we were headed as Gov. Whitmer did not offer any other realistic plans for how to approach this. She simply wanted to decommission the pipeline.

“The Line 5 tunnel is the best solution. It will be effective in getting hundreds of thousands of U.P. residents the heat they rely on while taking immense steps to protect our precious Great Lakes. I hope the governor will get behind this effort instead of continuing to attack a vital lifeline for people and businesses across our region.”
