Rep. Markkanen: Power of U.P. production on full display with announced MEDC funding
RELEASE|May 27, 2022

State Rep. Greg Markkanen today lauded a new Michigan Strategic Fund commitment in Calumet that further highlights the western U.P. as a prime domestic production destination and place for the cutting-edge jobs of tomorrow.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) has announced that Calumet Electronics Corporation will receive a performance-based investment to enhance a newly constructed, 35,000-square-feet manufacturing facility for next-generation advanced electronic components – a project that is expected to generate a total capital investment of $6.5 million and create 80 additional manufacturing and engineering jobs.

The company manufactures printed circuit boards for numerous fields, including industrial, power, aerospace, defense, medical and commercial.

“With this planned project, Calumet Electronics will be one of just a few companies in the entire country that will have this new production ability, and this critical work will be done right in the U.P. with U.P. workers,” said Markkanen, of Hancock. “I’m excited to see what this expansion will bring to our region. With the abrupt supply chain disruptions we have seen in recent years, it is immensely important to capitalize on the domestic manufacturing and production potential we have in our state while limiting our reliance on foreign producers.

“This is a step in that process – and I will continue fighting for us to take additional steps toward that overall goal. It’s the right approach for our workforce and both our state and local economies.”

Rep. Markkanen is in his second term representing residents in Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties, as well as Powell and Ishpeming townships in Marquette County.
