State Rep. Dave Prestin on Wednesday spearheaded House passage of his plan to lift driving hour restrictions for truckers traveling to assist with a disaster or other emergency. The legislation passed with overwhelming, bipartisan support.
“The fact I even have to offer this plan is an embarrassing example of the incompetence and over-regulation that exists within all levels of government,” said Prestin, R-Cedar River. “These restrictions are burdensome and unnecessary in regular circumstances and become dangerous roadblocks when emergencies arise. Allowing the free flow of aid and necessary resources and manpower during times of crisis is essential. My bill simply lifts the regulatory burden that’s been placed on our truckers, allowing them to fulfill needs without fear of retaliation from the state and federal governments.”
House Bill 4344 would exempt vehicles traveling to assist with a disaster or declared state of emergency from the adverse driving conditions rule, which limits the number of hours that can be driven in a certain amount of time.
The plan now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
