State Representatives Josh Schriver (R-Oxford) and Luke Meerman (R-Coopersville) sent the following letter to Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Elizabeth Hertel:
Dear Elizabeth Hertel,
As a member of the Homeland Security Oversight Committee, I am writing to formally request information regarding the verification of lawful immigration status and the associated costs of benefits administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).
Given the critical importance of ensuring taxpayer resources are distributed in compliance with state and federal laws, I request a response to the following questions:
- How many residents unable to provide proof of citizenship are currently receiving benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid?
- Are MDHHS workers required to check state or federal databases to verify an applicant’s lawful immigration status before issuing benefits? How frequently is this requirement monitored for compliance?
- What specific screening measures does MDHHS use to verify the lawful immigration status of applicants before the administration of benefits? Please provide copies of any training materials or guidance used by your agency to instruct workers on these procedures.
- If noncitizens are currently receiving SNAP and Medicaid benefits, what is the total estimated cost to taxpayers per year? Please provide a breakdown of the financial impact within the department’s budget.
- What protocols does MDHHS follow when screening applicants for eligibility? Please outline these procedures in detail, including any steps taken to prevent fraudulent claims.
I request a written response no later than March 26, 2025, and I am available to discuss this matter further at your earliest convenience. If any clarification is needed, please contact my office at [email protected] or 517-373-0839.
Thank you for your attention to this important inquiry. I appreciate your cooperation in ensuring transparency and accountability in the administration of public assistance programs.
Sincerely,
State Representative Josh Schriver
State Representative Luke Meerman
