Rep. St. Germaine Expresses Disappointment In Air Force Decision To Pass On Selfridge As Location For Fighter Jet Mission
RELEASE|March 17, 2023

LANSING, MICH – Representative Alicia St. Germaine (R-Harrison Township) expressed disappointed in the U.S. Air Force decision to forego selecting Selfridge Air National Guard Base as the host of an F-35 training center.

“I’m deeply disappointed Selfridge wasn’t picked as the location of the next F-35 training center,” said Rep. St. Germaine. “While this wasn’t the news we wanted, it won’t deter me from ensuring the long-term future of Selfridge and the approximately 5,000 jobs supplied to my district. There’s no question that the largest military complex airspace east of the Mississippi is the ideal location for the next future fighter mission and I won’t stop advocating on behalf of this crucial strategic base.”

In 2021, Selfridge was designated by the U.S. Air Force as a potential back up site for the training center. A spokesperson for the U.S. Air Force confirmed the decision made by officials in selecting Ebbing Air National Guard Base at Fort Smith in Arkansas as the location.

Long an important local economic engine, Selfridge Air National Guard Base accounts for an estimated 5,000 jobs and according to state figures makes an estimate $850 million economic impact statewide.

Earlier this year, Rep. St. Germaine spoke on the House floor in favor of a resolution urging the U.S. Air Force to replace A-10 attack aircraft currently stationed at Selfridge Air National Guard Base with an advanced generation fighter mission.

“It’s an absolute privilege to represent Selfridge,” added Rep. St. Germaine. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the sound of jets overhead is the sound of freedom. I won’t stop advocating on behalf of such an important part of my district.”
