State Rep. Donni Steele (R-Orion Township) today led the Michigan House in passing critical school safety legislation aimed at expanding access to the state’s confidential student safety tip line, OK2SAY. The measure is part of a broader bipartisan school safety initiative aimed at improving student well-being and ensuring rapid response to threats.

House Bill 4225, sponsored by Steele, would require schools to include the OK2SAY phone number and contact information on all student ID cards. This move is designed to give students quick, discreet access to a tool for reporting concerns about safety, violence, or potential harm.

“Nothing is more important to me than the safety of our kids,” Steele said. “With this legislation, we’re making sure every student has direct access to the OK2SAY tip line, right in their pocket. If they feel unsafe or witness something concerning, they’ll be able to report it immediately.”

OK2SAY operates 24/7, receiving confidential tips from K-12 students, as well as parents, school staff, and community members. Reports are forwarded to local school safety coordinators and law enforcement for investigation. Additionally, the information is compiled and submitted quarterly to the School Safety and Mental Health Commission, which oversees coordinated safety efforts across the state.

“In this ever-evolving world, the safety of our students must remain our top priority,” stated Steele. “Through collective action, we can ensure that every child can learn, grow, and thrive in a secure environment.”

Tips can be submitted to OK2SAY in multiple ways:

For immediate emergencies, individuals should always dial 911.
